Some of our St Philomena’s parishioners will have seen the article in the December 5th Midweek entitled “Helping Kids Read.” This featured Molly Hammersley at her book launch at Centre City.
I feel sure that this author found the writing, the compiling and the publishing of the books interesting and enjoyable. However, I know that Molly would have found the launching a challenge as I suspect that the limelight does not hold any appeal for her. I suppose that Molly realised that, by becoming involved with the public and giving her signature, the books would reach a wider range of the targeted readers.
Remedial Reading was the author’s forte throughout her teaching career and her four books, written specifically as remedial readers, reflect her experience and ability in this area. These books may, of course, be enjoyed by all children.
The difficulty associated with this work is to use material commensurate with the high interest level of the age group concerned. Here, the depth of Molly’s expertise is apparent as the stories certainly have that appeal. The photos and drawings she has chosen are delightful and enhance each story while the colourful front covers will lure children into finding out more.
The four titles are: “Laddie, the Seeing Eye Dog,” “Fun With Worms,” John Gets a Fright,” and “Kiwis on Skateboards.”
One Primary School Principal was heard to say, “These are good. This is exactly what we need.”
Congratulations Molly.
More please.
